Year 1 Finding our feet London Zoo We had a marvellous trip to London Zoo. Our visit began in the Education Centre where a member of the Zoo staff took us through our paces sorting animals into scientific categories. By the end of our engaging workshop we were experts at identifying reptiles, mammals and birds. To consolidate the concept of mammals being covered by fur there was even a live brown rat which some of us bravely stroked. After a spot of sustenance, we started animal hunting in earnest. Having the large male tiger pacing alongside us as we walked around his enclosure was thrilling, but the meerkats proved more enchanting and held our attention for even longer as they scampered in and out of tunnels. The penguins’ turn of speed was astonishing and, to our delight, they seemed perfectly happy to swim next to the plate glass viewing windows. Sadly, all too soon, it was time to find the coach and return to school. So many animals to see and not enough time to enjoy them all! 12
