Geography
In Geography pupils develop their knowledge to understand the
physical, social and economic forces which shape places and the
lifestyles of the people who live there. We study local areas/issues
and extend these studies into the wider world. The children learn to
use maps to locate cities, countries, mountain ranges, rivers, seas
and oceans. They use atlases, photos and the internet to explore the
environment and economies of those countries which they study.
They then use the skills they have developed in literacy, numeracy
and ICT to report and record their findings.
Year 5 River and Canal Trip - Brentford
As part of the Year 5 Geography curriculum, Year 5 visited the canal
network in Brentford. The Canal and Rivers Trust volunteers, greeted
us and ran through a safety briefing whilst walking along the canals.
They told us about the Grand Union Canal, which runs from London
to Birmingham, explaining its purpose and history. We were amazed
to find out that it was 200 years old. We explored the area and com-
pleted some questions which we used to enhance our studies of riv-
ers and canals back in the classroom. Sabina M
Year 6 explored a variety of natural phenomenon in Geog-
raphy this year. The effect of erosion on coastlines was
followed by the study of mountains and then natural disas-
ters such as earthquakes and volcanoes. We applied our
knowledge when designing leaflets which considered the
environmental impact. James G

Some fantastic projects on Brazil by Year 5
64
Year 5 studied rivers looking at
the features in the lower, middle
and upper courses. We also
researched Brazil, including the
landscape, climate, population
and stratas of the rainforest. This
culminated in an 8 week project
on Brazil. In the Summer term,
we used digital media including
Digimaps and Google Maps to
learn about scale and distance.
