Year 5

The River & Canal Trust , Bren ord

Year 5 went on a memorable trip to Bren ord Lock . At first , we were taught how the thick , tall gates worked . Also , how high the water goes and why . Then we went off in separate groups to do one of the ac vi es . I was in Group Two , Miss Schafer ’ s group , and we were going to see what Mr Cherry ’ s life was like . We saw stories about him and how he worked ; how he had to calculate how much the boats needed to pay to enter the canal . We saw an old warehouse ; it had been taken down but s ll I no ced it had painted wood with carved flowers on it for decora on . Mervyn , our guide , told us that they were thinking of taking it down completely or turning it into the warehouse that it was in 1930 . We combined with another group and learnt about dry inches . We were shown a tool which is used to see how much the boat was out of the water . I was fascinated by this . A er that we did a test to see how clean the water was . We all thought it looked very dirty but then the instructor took out a sample and it looked very clean . Everyone had had an amazing me .
