One way to build patience to deal with an

Alzheimer’s patient is through seeking advice or asking for help from others who are also dealing with an Alzheimer’s patient. One must even understand that misinterpretation is inevitable since the patient may no longer be able to interpret different cues. Be patient in communicating and set simple, clear and realistic goals. It is important for caretakers to build a support system with those who are forced to adapt to similar situations.

Develop an Individualised Approach

Caring for an Alzheimer's patient can be challenging since it requires the caretaker to be flexible. Alzheimer's affects every patient differently which means that one caretaker may have a different experience compared to another. Some Alzheimer's patients can become aggressive while others may be playful. Many patients may return to a total state of infancy, and others develop a yearning to return to precious old memories that they once knew. As caretakers, it is essential to understand that many Alzheimer's patients do not understand their current state and the experience can be just as frustrating for them. Developing an individualized care plan would be perfect since a walk in the park may work to control one patient whereas a nice cup of tea or calming instrumental music might work for another.

Ask for Help

As a caretaker always remember that you and the patient are made of flesh and blood and are not the enemy. It is understandable that you want to do your best to provide high-quality care and support to your loved one or patient, but it is important to rest. Rest is a vital source in obtaining necessary energy and is imperative to ensure proper psychological health. Ask a close relative to assist on some days and take time for you! Your life is also essential, and all of your hard work, dedication, support and care provided to the patient is appreciated. Take time to reminisce on precious memories with your loved one, go on walks, treat yourself and most importantly, enjoy the good times with your loved one. You got this.
