REVIEW 2013 IN A FLASH THE AFRICAN QUEENS: Kenya Women volleyball team Gor Mahia clinched the Kenyan Premier League ending an 18 year drought of being crowned champions. Gor Mahia won the league on 60 points ten points ahead of their arch-rivals AFC Leopards who finished second just ahead of Sofapaka on goal difference. Gor Mahia’s win came with more talk as they were awarded a 2-0 win in the boardroom following their abandoned match against Sony Sugar in August. The match was tied at 1-1. The three points meant Gor Mahia were proclaimed champions even though they had two matches to spare. Danny Sserenkuma was again the key player as he returned from his failed trials in Europe mid season to steer the ship for K’Ogalo who had lost Rama Salim in the transfer window. His tally of eight goals made him the top scorer for the second year at the club though nine off his tally last season where he emerged the second best scorer. Young revelation Timonah Wanyonyi stole the hearts of many with his style of play as he quickly became a first team regular following his move to the club in June. A FC Leopards on the other hand had to put in a spirited fight as they seemed to fade away. James Nandwa was hired to replace Luc Eymael in September. The side went to record back to back wins as Allan Wanga set and broke a new record of scoring in consecutive matches. The previous record was held JJ Masiga, Wilberforce Mulamba among others of scoring in four consecutive matches which he extended to six matches. He also eclipsed Mike Barasa as the Club’s top scorer since the team came back from relegation in 2009 with sixteen goals. Top 8 Defending champions Tusker finished in sixth place behind Sofapaka, Kenya Commercial Bank and Ulinzi respectively. They however won the Top 8 tournament beating Thika United on the finals. Thika United just managed to finish in the top eight behind Bandari. Chemelil Sugar will miss the next edition of Top 8 tournament after featuring in the last two editions. Relegation Kakamega Homeboyz was relegated alongside Karuturi Sports. The two sides had battled the chop for most of the season and on the last day, AFC Leopards beat the Kakamega based side 2-1 at Mumias Complex to send them down to the Nationwide.
