He stayed there for the rest of his life. Gross’ long career garnered him much fame. He was one of the founders of the American Medical Association, serving as president in 1867. He won many other honors and established a prize, sponsored by the Academy of Surgery. The Samuel D. Gross Prize is awarded every five years for original medical scholarship. He also received honorary degrees from academic institutions around the world. Samuel Gross, considered one of the greatest surgeons in the world, died in 1884 at the age of 78.
