doc Summer 2014 • Kentucky 13 The shelter is open 24 hours a day, but during the day clients “are out trying to change the circumstances of their life so they can become self-sustainable. Some of the guys have jobs. If they work shifts, they can come back in during the day. “They are living with others with the same goals.” Another Hope Center service is the HopeMobile. It is a big brightly painted RV staffed with an R.N. plus one or two caseworkers. It goes out Monday through Friday at about 7:30 a.m. and parks for several hours at a different church parking lot each day. Each week the HopeMobile serves about 350 to 400 people. The nurse and the caseworkers assess basic medical and other health needs. They also give away 150 to 200 sandwiches each day, made by volunteers. Hope Center receives most of its funding from the various levels of government. According to their fiscal year annual report ending June 30, 2013, 37 percent of their support came from federal funds, 36 percent from Kentucky state funds, and 11 percent from Lexington. Private contributions added 10 percent; 3 percent came from foundations and the United Way, and a final 3 percent from miscellaneous sources. Development Manager Raby gives Hope Center’s long-time Executive Director Cecil F. Dunn, a lawyer, great credit for the progress of the organization. Calling him a leader in the community, she adds, “He has a tremendous heart for this kind of work. He has taken it from its beginnings to the big force that it is today. Under his direction [the Hope Center] has gone from one facility to eight. [It] has been able to provide so much more help.” That’s what the Hope Center is all about: finding the underlying causes of ruined lives and helping people turn things around.
