In 1984 , Chatham Dockyard ’ s closure marked the end of 400 years of shipbuilding and the Royal Navy ’ s presence . However , the Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust emerged , safeguarding historically significant areas spanning 80 acres . As the trust celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2024 , it will remember the impact of the closure , showcase the achievements of preservation efforts and invite all to connect with its shared history .
