From the Mayor...
We often talk about schools, businesses, and landmarks when we describe Keene. We reminisce about the Old Betsy steam engine, formation of the first church, and wooden post office.
We tell people how Keene was home to many industries, including over 20 broom factories, a printing press, cabinet manufacturer, various gas stations, grocers, and more.
We spread news about Keene’ s famous titles, like“ Aviation Capital of Texas,” where the first airplane in Texas was built,“ Stick Horse Capital of the World,” for its famous toy stick horses, and“ Tent City” from its popular camp meetings.
But there is so much more to our town than the sum of its tangible parts. What truly transforms Keene and makes it exceptional are the people. It’ s the people who create the feeling of enjoyment and spirit of the community. It’ s the retailers who know your name, the teachers who nurture your child’ s potential, the volunteers who dedicate their time organizing local events. It is the responsive interactions, acts of kindness, and shared experiences that make us all feel like we truly belong.
