Southwestern Adventist University:“ Knowledge, Faith, and Service”

Southwestern Adventist University, founded in Keene in 1893, is Johnson County’ s only university. Southwestern is known for its friendly campus, commitment to academic excellence, and spiritual atmosphere. The University offers more than five dozen academic programs, including eight online programs.

Students at Southwestern are prepared for a career and service to their community through interaction with personable professors, unique programs, and many opportunities for involvement in clubs, internships, student government, and community outreach. Southwestern’ s campus is perfectly situated: close to home, located in the safe environment of Keene, and in close proximity to the culture and opportunities offered by the DFW Metroplex.
Celebrating its 50th birthday, the nursing program provides a simulation center and clinicals in multiple DFW Magnet-designated hospitals( only 9.8 percent of the nation’ s hospitals have this designation; there are four in DFW), offering increased opportunities for internships and residencies. The program highlights high tech skills and simulation labs, virtual reality, online RN to BSN program, a new online MSN in nursing education starting fall 2025, and a high NCLEX pass rate and program retention rate. The business program Enactus club recently placed 8th nationally and secured first place in the area league during the Enactus National Competition in Austin, Texas. The business department also runs an Innovation Lab, giving students opportunity for employment and learning how to create with technology such as 3D printers. One of the teams from the business department tied for # 1 globally out of 4,332 teams in the Business Strategy Game. The music department’ s touring choir performs across the country and travels on an annual international trip, singing around the world.
Worship services, community outreach, and a wide-variety of small-group Bible studies are a few of the faith-based campus events that students appreciate. The University is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution and is open to students of all faiths. Indeed, the campus is home to a wide diversity with 81 nations represented. Financial aid is available with over 90 percent of Southwestern students receiving financial assistance. Depending on factors such as family income, test scores, and leadership opportunities, students can receive renewable( annually) scholarships as high as $ 25,440!
The average class size is 20 students with a student to teacher ratio of 11:1, giving students access to real professors and research opportunities. The campus is home to distinctions such as a dinosaur museum( open to the public!) and lab with more than 43,000 bones, a radio station, an honors program, a STEM excellence program, and an extensive academic success program. With a full schedule of plays, concerts, and recitals, and an extensive library open to the public, the community is always welcome on campus.
