Activities
Jeff Allen, Taylor Mason, Dr. Dennis Swanberg, Tim Lovelace, Aaron Wilburn, and Kevin Williams.
• Christmas Light Parade. Held at 6:30 p. m. on the December Sunday that is 10 days after Thanksgiving, the parade attracts lighted entries from throughout the county that have wheels, feet or hooves. It is followed by a spectacular fireworks show.
• The Best Decorated Contest. Since 1998, this friendly contest has motivated local businesses and homeowners to get in the spirit of Christmas.
The contest, which recognizes a residential yard and a commercial business that is best decorated for the holidays, is held in December. Two awards are presented to businesses: One for the best outdoor decorations and another for the best indoor decorations. One award is presented to a residence for the best decorated yard or house.
A committee of judges visits each nominated home and business to make the final selection.
• Old Glory for Old Betsy. What longtime resident Dr. Brady Rusk began in 1995 with the purchase of 10 flags has grown to more than 350 U. S. flags displayed along Old Betsy Road in memory or in honor of someone on Federal holidays and special occasions. Local businessman Yddo Ortiz supervised the program from 2000 until 2020, when administration transitioned to the Keene Chamber of Commerce.
• Ribbon Cuttings. Every time a new business opens and joins the Chamber, or an established business joins the chamber, whether in Keene, Alvarado, Cleburne or the unincorporated areas in-between, the Chamber holds a ribbon cutting for that business. Chamber members attend the ribbon cutting and the business gets a photo and story distributed via local media.
SPENDING TIME IN KEENE As you spend time in and around Keene you will eventually think of Keene as“ your town.” As a Chamber, we hope that you will also think of the many small businesses in Keene as“ your businesses” and give them your patronage and support. This will assure their continued success, help bring in new businesses, and further enhance the experience of living in Keene.
