Criminology and Psychology
Key Information
Why study this course?
Keele’s dual honours programme in Criminology and Psychology
will allow you to study the human mind and behaviour and gain
an understanding of crime, criminals, and how society defines
and responds to them. You’ll graduate with a Psychology degree
accredited by the British Psychological Society, plus in-depth
knowledge of Criminology.
Crime, deviance, harm and disorder are taxing issues in most societies.
The Criminology and Psychology programme offers an opportunity to
explore answers to these matters from the perspective of both disciplines.
Criminology is broadly concerned with how crime and deviance are
understood, the efforts made to control crime, and the consequences of
crime for offenders, victims and society. Psychology is a large and varied
discipline dealing with the systematic investigation of mind and behaviour.
There is a natural overlap between Criminology and Psychology which
offers the opportunity to acquire a fuller understanding of these
questions than would be gained by studying either subject on its own.
This popular combination is therefore ideal for students wishing to study
the relationship between human behaviour and the social context and
structures in which crimes, harms and victimisation occurs. You will learn
about the social, legal and historical construction of crime and ‘deviance’
alongside psychological aspects of behaviour with regard to individual
differences, social, developmental, cognitive and biological perspectives.
