Fourth year
The fourth year allows MChem students to tackle an extensive
research project (50% of the year). Your research project will be
supervised by one of our research active academics and you will
work in an exciting and dynamic research environment alongside
research students.
Research Training gives you the chance to develop deeper
understanding of the background to your research project through
an extensive literature survey.
Advanced Topics modules investigate cutting edge developments
across all aspects of chemistry.
Teaching and assessment
In the first and second years, lectures cover the core material for
study, introducing you to concepts that are developed in workshops
and laboratory classes. Assessment is through a combination
of exams and coursework including reports, presentations, and
laboratory diaries. You will receive comprehensive feedback on
assessed work in a variety of formats including written, audio,
and face-to-face methods.
In the third and fourth years, lectures and seminars cover
research-focused material. Assessment includes exams and
coursework designed to further develop information retrieval
and critical thinking skills. Research project work is assessed
through a dissertation, evaluation of the laboratory diary and
an oral examination.

in the country, with three exceptionally wellequipped laboratories for undergraduate use.
Our courses are designed to help you develop
skills such as numerical, IT, communication and
problem-solving skills which are highly desired by
employers in all sectors as well as working towards
our Graduate Attributes. Keele chemists have
excellent employment prospects in the chemical
and pharmaceutical industries.
Study Abroad is available for all degree routes and
you may choose to spend a second year semester
