Why did you choose
Keele University for your
undergraduate study? What skills have you
developed from the
programme?
I was on an open day at Keele when
I realised how enthusiastic the lecturers
were and how much they genuinely
cared about teaching the students.
Other current maths students also
assured me that this was the case.
When the lecturers mentioned the
open door policy and that they are
willing to spend their time to help, this
really helped make my mind up for me. I think Keele provides a very
well-balanced curriculum with
opportunities to work in groups,
present work, develop problem
solving skills, as well as learning the
core mathematics component of the
degree. The many opportunities to
present at Keele have helped me
develop the confidence to give great
presentations for my Master’s course.
What was the best part
of the programme? What are your careers
aspirations?
The best part of the programme for
me was the Medical Statistics project/
dissertation that I did in my third year
which inspired me to pursue a career
in Medical Statistics. The connections
I made through the University also
helped lead me to do a PhD with the
Institute of Primary Care and Health
Sciences at Keele. I have just finished a MSc Statistics
course at the University of Leeds where
I achieved a Distinction and won a
Royal Statistical Society Prize for my
performance on the course. I am now
doing my first year of a PhD course at
Keele where I am researching the links
between Diabetes and Frozen Shoulder.
In the future I hope to continue doing
medical research.
Which aspects of the
programme did you
enjoy and why?
My lecturer always went the extra mile
to help students through their unique
ways of using technology to provide
extra learning material for students.
I found the YouTube videos on
Mathematical Biology particularly
helpful because they enabled me to
pause and work through examples at
my own pace if I found them difficult.
I really believe that this is something
that other teachers across the country
could learn from.
What advice would you
give to someone considering
studying Mathematics
at Keele?
To anyone starting at Keele I would
encourage them to take advantage of
the great lecturers who are willing to
spend so much time to help students
develop as young mathematicians.
