208 | Nursing and Midwifery You will experience a fantastic start to your career with a degree in midwifery, any of the four nursing fields; adult, children’s, learning disability and mental health or other professions within Health and Wellbeing sectors. As a nurse you might work in an acute hospital or a local community setting or within the independent (hospice, prison or care home) in a wide variety of clinical roles. By completing our course, you could go on to make a difference to peoples’ experiences of care at all stages of life in a range of clinical, managerial, educational or research settings. As a midwife you could work in community based and acute hospital settings or a midwife- led birth centre caring for women who have a normal pregnancy and birth, and in acute settings for those whose pregnancies are more complex. Currently the professional body (Nursing and Midwifery Council - NMC) is reviewing all the education standards and programme specific standards for nursing and midwifery nationally. In light of the review of standards initiated by the NMC in 2018, there are changes to programmes which will affect students studying on programmes from 2019 and beyond. All revised programmes are approved by the NMC and the University to ensure they meet the changes that the NMC have published. Nursing specific standards are operational from September 2019 and the midwifery specific standards will be operational from September 2020. Changes to the midwifery programme are not known at the time of writing this prospectus however working with the student community is central to changes moving forward. All changes will be discussed with the student community as the changes are planned and implemented. This is a very exciting time for nursing and midwifery as it will allow nurses and midwives to meet contemporary standards for future practice. keele.ac.uk/nursingandmidwifery Our courses within Nursing and Midwifery • Nursing (Adult) (SH) 210 • Nursing (Children's) (SH) 211 • Nursing (Learning Disability) (SH) 212 • Nursing (Mental Health) (SH) 213 • For Midwifery (SH) further information on entry requirements please 214 visit keele.ac.uk/entryrequirements
