BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons)
Why study this course?
This interdisciplinary course spans the physical sciences/social sciences divide, giving
you the skills and knowledge that will enable you to pursue careers in a wide range of
environment-focused sectors. The degree combines environmental science training with
knowledge development in politics, business management and health in the context of
sustainability.
To tackle the sustainability problems society faces, we need people with
expertise in both the scientific and social aspects of these issues who can
communicate effectively to a diverse audience. This flexible and innovative
course is taught across three faculties, integrating numerous disciplines
across science, social science, politics and management and offering a range
of options.
You will develop a broad theoretical knowledge base as well as practical,
laboratory and field-based skills covering natural and social science
methodologies. You will also develop expertise in Geographic Information
Systems (GIS) and statistical analysis of data. In addition to using Keele’s 600
acre campus as a living laboratory, you will undertake fieldwork off campus
on short (e.g. 1-day) and longer (e.g. 5-day) field trips with UK and overseas
options. Depending on your third year choices, you can choose to graduate
with a BA rather than a BSc. Work placement and study abroad options are
also available.
What will this mean for my future?
All organisations, public and private, increasingly need to engage with
environmental and sustainability issues; this is a growing area of desirable
skills for employment. Graduates from this degree have gone on to varied
careers in environmental consultancy, sustainability management,
conservation, science writing, government policy, environmental charities,
teaching, transport planning, environmental education and environmental
health. This course also provides excellent training for those interested in
postgraduate study and research careers.
