BA (Hons)
Why study this course?
This combined degree programme offers the opportunity to study these two distinctive
disciplines, benefiting from the synergies between these two ‘high cognition’ subjects.
Fluency with mathematical structures and logic will help your understanding of musical
form, while music-making and composition will let you apply your mathematical mind
creatively.
In year one in Mathematics you will study core material in calculus and
algebra while in subsequent years you can begin to tailor your programme
according to your own strengths or interests. In an intellectually stimulating
environment, amongst world-leading researchers, you can specialise in pure
or applied mathematics, or explore probability and modelling.
Music at Keele is a hub of world-class musicologists, composers, performers
and music technologists, including specialists in film and TV music,
contemporary classical music and world music. You will have opportunities
to perform with orchestras, choirs, ensembles and to create your own
collectives. You will have access to free concerts, gigs and workshops
by world-leading practitioners and researchers. You will also have 24/7
access to our music practice rooms, studios and an extensive music library.
Stravinsky once said, 'The musician should find in mathematics a study
as useful to him as the learning of another language is to a poet.'
What will this mean for my future?
Mathematics graduates pursue a wide variety of careers, including;
accountancy, actuarial training, aircraft engine design, web analytics, NHS
project manager, operational research, software developer, scientific research,
and medical statistics.
Graduates in Music follow careers in media production, finance and banking,
law, publishing, broadcast marketing and consultancy. You could go on to
work as a teacher, performer, composer, music therapist, community musician,
or sound technician, or in games design, film, radio and television. You may
also choose to pursue postgraduate study at Master's or doctoral level.
