English Literature, Creative Writing and History | 147 H I S TO RY A N D P S Y C H O L O G Y BSc (Hons) Why study this course? You’ll learn about and research why humans feel, think and act in the ways that they do. The History and Psychology combination offers students the opportunity to develop a lifelong appreciation of the historical past as well as its influence on the societies of today and tomorrow. In History, you will study the way humans have always tried to organise their lives – physically and conceptually, individually and together. Such an appreciation of the past is essential to understanding where we are today and how we are attempting to shape the future, and even societies in the very distant past can be highly relevant. Studying Psychology involves exploring and researching why humans feel, think and act in the ways that they do. You will learn about the latest psychology research, including studies published by our own friendly and approachable staff, which tell us about human behaviour from social, developmental, biological and cognitive perspectives. We will show you how to design and conduct your own psychological studies in our well-equipped labs using a range of techniques including interviews, surveys and experiments. What will this mean for my future? You’ll develop the sort of enquiring, open-minded and creative attitude which employers are looking for, leading to potential careers options in a range of fields including teaching, research, charity work, counselling, librarian, archivist, heritage manager, solicitor, journalist, or researcher. Psychological careers include clinical, counselling, educational, forensic, occupational or sports psychology. Whatever path you choose in your working life, you will develop a psychological perspective on human behaviour which is valued in a range of careers. This course is accredited by the British Psychological Society, a necessary first step for many professional careers in psychology including becoming a Chartered Psychologist.
