CRIMINOLOGY AND PSYCHOLOGY
BSc (Hons)
Why study this course?
This programme offers an opportunity to explore and explain some of society’s most
fascinating questions. Studying this popular combination allows you to study the human
mind and behaviour, gain an understanding of crime, criminals, and how society defines
and responds to them. Criminology at Keele is ranked Top 10 in the Guardian University
League Tables, 2018.
This combination is ideal for students wishing to study the relationship
between human behaviour and the social context and structures in which
crime, harm and victimisation occur.
Criminology is broadly concerned with how crime and deviance are
understood, the efforts made to control crime, and the consequences of crime
for offenders, victims and society. Psychology is a large and varied discipline
dealing with the systematic investigation of mind and behaviour.
You will learn about the social, legal and historical construction of crime
and ‘deviance’ alongside psychological aspects of behaviour concerning
individual differences, social, developmental, cognitive and biological
perspectives.
What will this mean for my future?
Many students find their degree useful for careers in probation, community
work, victim support, drug and addiction centres and other occupations
across the public and private sectors. Many also go on to further study.
We also build opportunities for developing employability skills into all our
modules, for example by encouraging the use and analysis of primary data,
and the presentation of material to a range of different audiences. You will
also get opportunities to hear from practitioners and researchers active in the
field.
This course is accredited by the British Psychological Society, a necessary first step for
many professional careers in psychology including becoming a Chartered Psychologist.
