Healthcare
The University has a considerable impact upon society in the area of medicine and healthcare through our research , education and citizenship activities , as well as membership of trust and national advisory boards , charity work , and volunteering .
Keele ’ s healthcare staff and students have continued to go above and beyond to help care for the community with newly qualified medics and nurses joining the NHS frontline in response to the Covid-19 pandemic , practicing doctors from our Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences continuing their vital work to care for our communities , and retired doctors from the Faculty of Health even returning to practice to help with the Covid-19 vaccination drive . In their role as GPs , some Keele doctors even administered the Covid-19 vaccine , manufactured by Cobra Biologics at their site on Keele ’ s Science and Innovation Park , to patients in their local surgeries in North Staffordshire .
Keele ’ s excellent credentials in healthcare and primary care research were further highlighted this year when Professor Christian Mallen , Head of the School of Medicine , was announced as the new Director for the NIHR ’ s School for Primary Care Research , bringing the directorate of the School to Keele for his five-year tenure . The SPCR carries out world-leading research in primary care , providing a focus for primary care research within the NIHR and supporting the development of primary care research . The development of medical technologies , interventional approaches , the patient experience , and service design and delivery are just some of the research activities undertaken which impact positively at a local , national , and international level .
The new IC7 will help accelerate the development of more sophisticated approaches to health diagnostics , prognostics and treatment . Academic experts within the University are carrying out research to support health innovation , including the use of artificial intelligence ( AI ) to help improve treatments .
The University has thousands of undergraduate students studying professional programmes in the areas of medicine , midwifery , nursing , pharmacy , physiotherapy and radiography who are engaged in direct service delivery and patient care during their clinical placements .
This experience takes place within over twenty NHS trusts , 100 GP practices , and over 200 private , voluntary or independent providers , and spans the whole of the West Midlands , Cheshire , Liverpool , Wales and as far away as Kent and Durham . Keele students also undertake placements around the world in both a voluntary capacity or as a planned student exchange , having a global impact on health .
