together with South African colleagues
in memory of my old friend, mentor,
colleague from Tanzania days, and
fellow ROAPE co-founder, Lionel Cliffe.
This year took me to Gaberone,
Botswana in March and to a writing
workshop organised by the Journal
of Southern African Studies and
supported by the journal I co-founded
over 40 years ago – the Review of
African Political Economy (ROAPE).
The International Initiative for
Promoting Political Economy (IIPPE)
had its annual conference at the Leeds
Business School in September and
I was invited to participate in a
session on Monetary Sovereignty.
I compared the experiences of Greece
and Zimbabwe asking in the first case
how Greece could actually leave the
common currency, suggesting that
any new drachma might end up like
the Zimbabwe dollar, with Greece
continuing to use the euro without
belonging to the Eurozone, just as
Zimbabwe uses the $US and the South
African Rand.
Finally, I spent the last few days of
October in the beautiful castle district
of Budapest at the invitation of the
Institute for Social and European
Studies (ISES) based in Kőszeg,
Hungary for its Blue Skies conference
