11 Keele Management School News Working harmoniously with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service Combining work with study is never going to be easy but Jim Bywater and Glynn Luznyj from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service recently completed our Certificate in Industrial Relations and feel that their hard work and commitment have been well worth the effort. Both Jim and Glynn have been so inspired by the Certificate that they have now enrolled onto the MA Industrial Relations. Jim Bywater Jim Bywater, Group Manager, Central Risk Reduction Why did you choose to study on the Certificate in Industrial Relations course? Having good industrial relations within the fire service is key to the success of all our current work. This course has provided me with a greater understanding of the history and challenges within the relationship. We work closely with all our Rep bodies and this has given me a greater knowledge and understanding from all sides. What was it like to be studying part time whilst working? As expected, it has been challenging. Time management and self-discipline has been required. However, once immersed into the reading and the knowledge has been absorbed, the essay writing has been an enjoyable process. How has the Certificate benefited you at work? The academic side of essay writing has helped me fine tune my report writing. The wider understanding of industrial relations has benefited my work with my team and wider partners in this relationship, opening my mind to wider perspectives. Why did you decide to move onto the MA programme? The subject is really important with my line of work. The Certificate has given me thirst for more knowledge and to challenge my own and others thinking around the subject content.
