If you weren’t an academic, what would you be? KMS Finance Programmes: Providing you with skills for a career in Finance Students also gain a practical, hands-on experience of stock market trading and portfolio management by taking part in the Keele MSc student investment competition. During the competition, students make investment decisions and manage their portfolios in real-time through Bloomberg Professional platform which provides experience that is identical to trading in real life. Participants make investment decisions using real data, news and company reports in a very similar way as an equity analyst in the City or on Wall Street. The competition enables participants to: Dr Alena Audzeyeva My early childhood dream was to become a bin man. Next I wanted to be a train driver, but had I chosen not to continue education past high-school, most probably I’d be in sports – either tennis or football, perhaps skiing. Whatever I’d be doing, it would have to be something allowing for travelling and experiencing the world. What would you say to a prospective student thinking of joining KMS? Hesitate no more! I have been at KMS for only a couple of months and it’s great. Come and join me, my colleagues and the thriving student community. I’d change my jolly tone after that and explain the advantages of the School, its dual-honours offering, academic expertise, research-led teaching, international connections and the prospects all of this provide for an excellent education and self-development. • Develop Investment Strategies, which includes trading on these strategies and evaluating their effectiveness throughout the competition • Develop Research and Analytical Skills by researching the companies using fundamental data and using technical analysis to conclude the investment ideas. All these tools are available in Bloomberg Any advice you would give to a current KMS student? I’d focus on emphasising the importance of university as a time and place for self-challenge and development. I would be advising each and every student to grasp the opportunities presented by KMS with both hands and fully utilise the chances provided by the dual-honours system. I’d make sure they know it might be the fi nal occasion for them to develop expertise based on their interests, rather than labour market specialisation-driven demands. If you could visit any country in the world, which would it be and why? I’d have a shot at Kiribati – you can’t get much further away from it all than that. After a while I’d move to Latin America and explore it from Cape Horn and Ushuaia, through Patagonia, and Atacama Desert all the way to Panama Canal. Then it would be time for Djibouti – I always wanted to see it, ever since I learnt about its existence. By now, surely I would have spent all my annual leave… and anyway; we’re back at question 1 again. 02 One of the major strengths of our MSc Finance suite of programmes is their practical use and application of Bloomberg. Programme Director, Dr Alena Audzeyeva explains what this means for KMS students. “In addition to the learning activities that are part of the MSc programme curriculum, students also benefi t from a range of professional training events and activities to build employability skills. “In recent years we have enjoyed collaboration with Bloomberg, London. Students take part in the Bloomberg Professional training event which is delivered by experts from Bloomberg. During this event, students are familiarised with the Bloomberg Professional platform and explore its uses, functionality and tools as used by fi nance professionals. “Throughout their studies at Keele, students are able to use Bloomberg Professional service for their fi nancial market research and also hands-on practice of applying professional analytical tools and functions. Bloomberg Professional is accessible from all terminals in KMS multifunctional IT suite.” • Keep Abreast of the Latest Developments of the Market by engaging with current fi nancial markets and following overall market trends, being mindful of mergers and acquisitions or earning releases of their target companies • Build Bloomberg Skills by using Bloomberg Professional trading platform throughout the competition and utilising many Bloomberg functions as part of research.
