Federation (ITF), Global
Union Young Workers
Conference in Buenos Aires

r Steve French, Senior Lecturer in Industrial
Relations and Human Resource Management,
travelled to Argentina earlier this year to deliver a
keynote address to the International Transport Workers’
Federation (ITF) ‘Global Union Young Workers Conference’
on the future of work.
Addressing more than 250 young transport workers
in Buenos Aires, Steve explained how the process of
economic globalisation had created the conditions for
a ‘race to the bottom’ in relation to workers’ pay and
conditions and outlined the strengths and limitations of
forms of international regulation.
Steve said
It was a fantastic opportunity to visit
Buenos Aires and to experience the passion
and hospitality of the Argentina transport
workers’ unions who hosted the conference.
More importantly, it was inspiring to see
so many young trade unionists coming
together to identify the problems they face
in the global economy and, through working
together and solidarity, seek to improve
their members’ working lives.
