Studying abroad enhances your child’s education
and transforms them into an international citizen
by providing skills and knowledge to compete
for jobs in 21st century global job markets.
Studying abroad
We know that it’s a big decision for
your son or daughter to go abroad
to live for an extended period so
we’ve compiled some links and
answered some Frequently Asked
Questions to help you guide your
child as they make decisions about
their higher education.
What can my child study?
Keele offers foundation,
undergraduate and postgraduate
degree courses in Humanities
and Social Sciences, Natural
Sciences and Medicine and Health.
At undergraduate level there are
opportunities to study two disciplines
in our extensive selection of
combined honours degrees or to
pick one of many single honours
degrees which offer greater breadth
and depth in one subject.
For a detailed list of the courses
on offer at Keele please visit:

How much will the total study
experience cost?
Keele and the local area offer good
value for money; it’s cheaper than
living in a big city, but of course total
expenditure will depend on how
conscientious your child is
with money!
For an up to date list of tuition fees
please visit keele.ac.uk/study/

We recommend that students allow
£12,000 per year for living expenses.
A breakdown of these costs is given
on page 33.
Where will my child live?
The University has over 2800
bedrooms on campus for students
with varying facilities to suit all
budgets. International students
are guaranteed university
accommodation in the first year*
and can apply to return each
year of their course. For more
information please visit keele.ac.uk/
discover/accommodation
* if they meet published application deadlines
Many students prefer to stay on
campus in the first year to help
themselves settle in and then opt to
share a house in the local area with
friends. Two bus routes service the
local area operating from around
6.30am until midnight. For the hours
in between the Students’ Union runs
a Safety Bus to help students get
home after an event or late night
study session.
Is it safe?
The campus and surrounding
areas have a low crime rate and
the University Security Team are
operational and on patrol 24 hours
a day. For additional peace of mind
the University uses SafeZone:
a free app service to help give
round-the-clock safety reassurance
to Keele University staff and
students. It connects the user to
safety or security assistance at
the push of a button. To find out
more visit keele.ac.uk/estates/

We encourage students to take
responsibility for themselves and
their belongings by using common
sense; not carrying valuables or
large amounts of cash, not walking
alone after dark and looking out for
each other on a night out. Residence
Advisors, Student Support and
Advice and Support at Keele (ASK)
can provide safety and wellbeing
advice on staying safe both on and
off campus.
Will my child get a job after
graduation?
The University offers lots of careers
guidance; employability skills are
embedded into the curriculum
and there are opportunities for
internships, work placements,
careers fairs and employer
networking events but ultimately
your child needs to be proactive
in their job hunting efforts.
Many Keele University degrees
are accredited by the relevant
professional body and they are
recognised in a number of countries.
Where there are practising
requirements such as in Law
or the Health Professions there
may be local licensing exams to
undertake before the degree is
recognised. Please contact us with
your specific queries regarding
overseas recognition of Keele
degrees so that we can assist.
Can my child work part-time
while they study?
Students on a Tier 4 Student Visa
are eligible to work 20 hours per
week and many do so in shops,
restaurants and entertainment
spaces in the local area. The
University has some part-time,
casual roles open to students
however students working on
campus are restricted to 18 hours
per week as per University policy.
What support services are
available if my child needs help?
Keele University provides a
comprehensive student support
service covering all aspects of
student life and there are staff
dedicated to the support of
International students. They can
provide advice and guidance on
immigration, finance and welfare
issues and signpost students
to specialist services for health,
disabilities and learning support.
For students wanting faith or spiritual
guidance there are chaplains from
three Christian churches and a
Muslim chaplain.
Every student is assigned
a personal tutor who is available
to give academic guidance.
Additional support in academic
English is offered through the
Language Centre.
The Students’ Union also offers an
independent advice service known
as ASK, which can be consulted
on a wide range of issues.

making a decision?
