at Hokuala – recently named “ Hawaii ’ s Best Golf Course ” for the third consecutive year by the World Golf Awards – was redesigned into 18 holes as part of an overall reimagining of the property . The course reopened in 2017 and , in addition to improved playing conditions , the redesign enhanced the dramatic shot values on the course as well as the ocean and mountain views .
While the back tees on the 7,156-yard Jack Nicklaus Signature Course make it the most challenging track on Kauai , the Ocean Course offers four sets of tees so that all golfers can enjoy a playable experience with enough challenge to keep their intrigue .
The main attraction arrives on holes 13-16 , which stretch more than a half mile along the dramatic Kauai coast . On the par-4 13th , golfers take dead aim at the Pacific Ocean between the coconut palms , followed by an approach shot that looks like a postcard with views of humpback whales breaching in the distance .
“ The 14th is a long par 3 that is simultaneously intimidating and one of the most beautiful holes in the world ,” Freestone says . “ Playing downhill , it tests you with a long , narrow green and daunting bunkers , grass swells and lava rocks that await offtarget shots .”
On the 15th , golfers have multiple options off
the tee , though you ’ ll need to pay careful attention to your approach as plenty of trouble awaits and the pressure of an audience in the nearby residences and restaurant may factor in .
With the Kuki ’ i lighthouse just off the left side of the green , many golfers may want to go for it on the driveable par-4 16th , which measures 331 yards from the tips and 265 from the whites . The fairway on this downhill hole narrows near the green , however , and with a deep canyon left of the putting surface , there is little margin for error . Freestone sums up the golfer ’ s experience . “ The front nine plays through jungles and the back is all oceanfront drama ,” he said . “ The golf course truly captures the beauty of Kauai .”
