Chaired by Professor David Keyes

The 2015 Programs were packed with visionary talks , led by Lubna Olayan , KAUST Trustee and development partner in Innovation , Creativity , and Entrepreneurship . Engineering highlights included MIT ’ S Anette Hosoi on the biologically inspired design of robots and NYU ’ s Mike Holland on the web-based instrumentation of smart cities . Scientific highlights included a visit to the early universe , whose signals are just now reaching us , with radio astronomer Anthony Readhead of Caltech , and a look at early humans – Neandertals and Denisovans – with Svante Pääbo of the Max Planck Institute . Though much later , the still early inhabitants of the Arabic peninsula – the Nabataeans of Mada ’ in Saleh – were the focus of Laila Nehmé of the Saudi-French Archeological Project . Some extremes of modern humans were explored by desert photographer Michael Martin and world-champion free diver Guillaume Nery .
