Karen Weaver's Fight for Clean Water | Página 6

RELIEF FOR RESIDENTS Like many communities, Flint’s City Council put a law in place in the 1940’s which allows the city to attach a lien to homes for unpaid water bills. However, during the water crisis, Mayor Weaver and many Flint residents were upset to receive a water bill at all. In May, Flint City Council voted for a moratorium on water liens, and Mayor Weaver upheld it, giving residents relief. Locally the biggest challenge has been tension between the mayor and the city council concerning the water source. While under Emergency Management, Flint’s City Council approved a plan to build a new water pipeline to Lake Huron. Under the Council approved plan, Flint would use 80 percent Lake Huron water, and 20 percent Flint River Water. CONT’D
