Mary lived with an aunt and uncle , and began working with Junior Achievement and the YMCA . Becoming a regular on city busses , she learned her way around the city . She spent time with older adults , helping them cook and clean to earn a few extra dollars , and knowledge . She enjoyed just listening to them , learning , taking mental notes . Willingness to listen and hard work took her through college .
It was in the State House of Representatives , Mary Waters earned the nickname , ‘ Quiet Storm ’. She doesn ’ t always say what she ’ s feeling , but at the right moment she speaks up , armed with all the information needed to tackle the issues of the day .
As a candidate for the Detroit City Council , Mary ’ s supporters know that she can make a difference . “ I am not easily intimidated ,” she says .
Waters , a long time environmental advocate , breast cancer survivor and champion for working families vows to push to regulate industrial companies and limit environmental contaminants that are causing asthma and cancer in Detroit , which suffers from some of the highest rates of these diseases in the nation . She wants to protect the Great Lakes while working to ensure safe , affordable drinking water for city residents . She also vows to continue her advocacy for raising the minimum wage so that working Detroiters can care for their familes with dignity .
