La coopérative de Kuujjuaraapik/
Whapmagoostui a été incorporée le 5
août 1961. Elle est l’un des cinq membres
fondateurs de la Fédération des coopératives du Nouveau-Québec (Ilagiisaq).
Son nom officiel demeure l’Association
coopérative de Great Whale River, nom
que portait la collectivité en 1961.
Le magasin a été agrandi et modernisé
à l’été 2014. Il comprend une stationservice et un hôtel important dans la
collectivité. n

was running smoothly,” Mary Sandy remembers.
“I recall people complained about the high cost
of cigarettes. Back then they cost 50 cents for a
pack!”
David Sandy worked hard and didn’t
care how much work he had to do. “He was
working for the Inuit and Crees, alongside Charlie Kumarluk.,” his wife recalls.
“I sewed clothing like mittens, paaluks, to sell at
the Co-op.”
David Sandy worked for about 7 or 8 years, but
eventually moved on when he knew that the Coop was doing well. People were buying things so it
had revenue. In 1967, Kuujjuaraapik’s Co-op had
revenues of $123,898; in 2014, $5,758,801. From
1967 to 2014 it has made total revenues of more
than $100 million – an amazing story of success
for a business that started out with nothing but
the vision of creating its own enterprise!
The Kuujjuaraapik/Whapmagoostui co
operative was incorporated on August 5, 1961.
It is one of the five founding members of the
Fédération des coopératives du Nouveau-Québec
(Ilagiisaq). Its official name remains the Great
Whale River Co-operative Association, based on
the name of the community back in 1961.
The store was enlargened and modernized in
the summer of 2014. It includes a gas station and
also owns an important hotel in the community. n
