The Kangiqsualujjuaq Cooperative Association is spoken of as being the very first
cooperative that was created in Nunavik. Its
story will be told here in the point of view
of two people directly involved at its very
beginning, Willie Etok and Bobby Baron, as
well as a third and young Sophie Mary Annanack who has been involved with their cooperative since a young age.
Willie Etok
Willie Etok was a young man of 20 when
the coop was first established as he worked in
all aspects of its early operations. Today he is
74 years old and recalls all the hard work it
took to start up their cooperative. He recalls
the first meeting that took place to decide on
having a cooperative and when the decision
had been made he tells us:
I was at the age where I could go out on
the land in search of the animals to feed my
family, and that was when our cooperative
began. The first activity we would do was

something that had never been done before.
When the days grew longer, near springtime, a group of us able men left inland from
Kangiqsualujjuaq. We knew we would be going home only in the summer and though we
had some fear we went ahead and stayed a
time up there. We were gone to cut wood.
There was a qallunaaq with us who had arrived by plane. And the plan was for all the
wood we had cut to flow down the river
while we followed. The work also entailed
tying them together so they would float and
be carried down the river.
We had built a couple of boats with motors
that the airplane had flown in, so off we went
with the wood. However when we arrived
at the falls known as Kangniit, the wood
got loose, breaking into pieces and going all
over the place. We would follow the floating wood everyday, taking care and retying
them in the water when necessary. Finally,
we arrived to the sea after having flowed
along the river Kuururjuaq. Willie Emudluk
was with us and was our leader. We still had
a ways to go as we had not yet arrived to our
destination, and there was a point that we
call Akilisikallak we had still to go around.
Akilisikallak was a point all travellers passed
through as they travelled to the trading post
of the area back then. We reached a landing
area where the wood could b
