Kang Yao Primary School - Laos | Page 6

Kang Yao Village has 1,025 residents and is home to over 200 households and the vast majority of the population is dependent on subsistence agriculture for their livelihoods.

Kang Yao Primary School was established in 1991 and has a current enrollment of 116 students (59 boys, 57 girls) and employs four teachers (one man and three women). Kang Yao Primary School consisted of two buildings. The first building is made of concrete and is acceptable and functional. The second building, however, was made of wood, was in a state of great disrepair and in dire need of replacement. It was supported by substandard timber columns bolted on concrete piers, walls made out of salvaged wood slats and corrugated metal sheets with a zinc roof. It was structurally unsafe. Also the classrooms became very hot and dusty in the dry season and cold, damp and muddy (earth floors) in the wet season. The students clearly lacked a safe and suitable infrastructure to focus on their learning.
