Helena’s Lament
by Megan Range
Two young lovers, Jack and Jill,
Put their love upon a hill
And the view from there was great
They held the earth upon a plate
Passions high, emotions climb
Then their thoughts turned into crime
Tiger, tiger, burning bright,
Stole from them their inner light
The fear within swallowed them whole
Darkness descended their soul
Downwards, down fell Jack and Jill
Though they loved each other still
Pounced upon by patterned paw
Their hearts were left frozen and raw
Inflated anxieties
Turned passion to formalities
Though hard we may think we fall
There is a tiger in us all
