better get going now, huh? Wouldn’t want your mom wondering where
you got off to.”
I picked up Olive and followed Pete as he bolted out of the house.
We didn’t stop running until we got home.

Our parents were waiting for us, my dad painstakingly edging
the grass next to the driveway and my mother lounging in an Adirondack
chair, a book sitting in her lap. She got up as we slowed to a walk in the
yard.
“Where were y
