How does Langar demonstrate sustainability?
Jatinder: Langar has been around for hundreds of years as an institution in Sikh Gurdwaras( place of worship) to this day and can only have done so if it was sustainable. Langar has provided countless meals to those who may have gone hungry or skipped meals, therefore I ' d say it ' s a part of the social fabric for those coming together preparing Langar with love and all those who come together to have langar. It ' s an opportunity for those who can donate food, money or their time to do so and for everyone to have langar and share it as equals.
Ria: Langar demonstrates sustainability with free food reducing inequality amongst students, whilst promoting humility and a sense of belonging. Vegetarian meals also reduce environmental impact compared to meals containing meat. Food waste is minimised as any food left over from the event is given back to the local Gurdwara to be distributed there. Langar is also economically sustainable with low costs due to volunteers and a donations-based system which is supported by the loving community. It is also a sustainable event in the sense that it is hosted every year due to its sustainable nature is every aspect.

Many people talk about how welcoming and grounding Langar feels. What do you think creates that atmosphere and what can it teach us about creating a more caring and connected campus community?

Jatinder: I believe the welcoming and grounded environment is created by the values of selfless service. We ' re here of our own accord and are happy and willing to serve anyone. The fundamental principles of Langar are what makes this different to just any other free food event. It ' s all entirely voluntary and there ' s no rush to be in and out once you ' ve eaten as everyone is welcome to stay as long as they want and even take part in volunteering themselves for however long if they wish.
Ria: Keele campus is at the heart of the student community and Langar on campus highlights the concept of a shared responsibility to care for everyone and everything around us. Our event is proof that respect and humility can help a community blossom into a beautiful environment.
