A Place of Happiness: Woodmeadow Walk
At Keele University, a small but growing community is bringing nature recovery and human connection together. That community is Nurture CIC- working to create places where people and the natural world can thrive alongside one another.
Our flagship project, Woodmeadow Walk, sits near the Keele Observatory. Here, volunteers roll up their sleeves for Himalayan balsam removal, wildflower planting, biodiversity monitoring and habitat restoration. These activities strengthen local ecosystems while offering supportive, accessible opportunities to build confidence, improve mental health, and foster social connection.
There is something powerful about working with your hands in the soil alongside others. Conversations flow more easily outdoors. Strangers become teammates. Teammates become friends. We share time and skills, and leave feeling part of something bigger than themselves.
Creativity, Community and Wellbeing
Nurture CIC also runs creative“ Place of Happiness” workshops designed to deepen environmental stewardship through art, reflection and shared experience.
From painting sessions to poetry workshops inspired by nature, each project centres on wellbeing, learning and connection.
These are opportunities to slow down, be present and create something meaningful. At our most recent Bird Box Painting Workshop, all participants reported improved mood and stronger social connection. In a fast-paced university environment, carving out intentional space for creativity and calm can make all the difference.
