melancholy by erika xaron
As opposed to Autumn and Winter, which are the perfect time to appreciate and feel a certain melancholy and solitude. The earthy tones, fallen leaves on the ground, quiet lakes and the chilling atmosphere inviting us to get warm by the fire, in a cosy wood cabin.
However, it is not just the seasons that influence our moods… if we allow our creativity and imagination to change this. We actually can express different feelings depending on the light and textures, by playing with them, we can convey melancholy in a summery scene or happiness in an autumn picture. It is all inside us.
In the nutshell, I just would like to mention this quote of Victor Hugo: “Melancholy is the happiness of being sad.”
I believe it contains a very good explanation of what melancholy means to me. It is difficult to express it as well as to understand it, nevertheless I really think that when we are melancholic, there is mixture of sadness and happiness. It is such a complicated combination – perhaps that is why I like Melancholy so much…

B/w was chosen here to express a feeling of desolation, doubt, remorse. She is feeling worried about something, and her face resting on her hands helps to understand their unhappiness.
Through the window we see the snow and cold weather, that gives the image a complete sense of darkness and introspection.
