As at December 2012 the Ministry of Information and Communications estimated the Kenyan entertainment industry to be worth approximately Ksh 8.6 billion. The industry is comprised of the broadcasting, cinematic, theatrical music and interactive industries. The film and television industry, that comprises of documentaries and advertising commercial alone is worth Ksh 4 billion and employs approximately 15,000 people. Acting as compared to the previous years is a lucrative career. The growth of the industry is now able to sustain the actors, producers, directors and many other professionals with steady incomes of up to Ksh 60 000 per month. There are more than 200 firms involved in the film industry across the country. However, at optimal production, it is estimated that the film industry can generate over Kshs.40 billion and create more than 250,000 jobs annually. It is in that spirit, that the annual Kalasha film and television award was born.
