“Fashion is obsessed with gender
… [it] defines and redefines the
gender boundary.” – Elizabeth
Wilson
Though gender is a social
construct and cannot be defined
by the possession of a certain set
of genitals, it does have labels
of ‘femininity’ and ‘masculinity’
embedded into it.
But definitions of femininity and
masculinity are fragile and differ
from place to place.
Pink for Boys
and Blue for
Girls?
Until late 20th century, pink was worn by
boys and blue by girls. Pink was considered
a stronger colour and hence suitable
for boys. Blue, on the other hand was
considered much softer and daintier and
therefore, suitable for girls.
