• The first education class presented as a webinar was on February 22 , 2006 . It had an interactive format where the student could listen , watch , and participate . Steve Anderson was the instructor , and the class was titled “ Paper Free Document Management .”
• Legislative Day was on March 1 , 2006 . Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger about Kansas lawmakers seeking stricter penalties for uninsured drivers ; 7 to 9 % of all drivers in Kansas were not insured . Automobile insurance was mandatory in Kansas . Two bills were proposed on the issue . Senate Bill 321 was a proposal to amend KSA 40-3118 , developing and implementing an electronic motor vehicle financial security verification system in the State of Kansas . Senate Bill 322 would create stricter civil and criminal penalties for uninsured drivers .
• On May 4 , 2007 , an EF5 tornado hit the town of Greensburg . The tornado caused over $ 153 million in property damage . The destruction included 95 % of the city . The other 5 % was heavily damaged . Thirteen people were killed during the storm , and over 60 were injured . The devastating tornado virtually eliminated the town from the map .
In response to this disaster , Larry Magill , executive vice president , reached out to IIABA CEO Bob Rusbuldt and was able to get the Florida association to offer to send their Trusted Choice Catastrophe Response Vehicle . It allowed the two agencies , Peoples Insurance and Corns & Ballard , to set up as its operations base . KAIA Membership Development Director Paul Thompkins spent three weeks in Greensburg helping . Larry Magill and Dan Deener , the president of the association , also helped during this time and then drove the vehicle back to Florida . A plaque was given to the Florida association for the help they provided .
Paul Tompkins received a special Distinguished Service Award along with a collage of pictures of the Greensburg disaster .
• Starting September 1 , 2007 KAIA began paying dues to National for all agents to become members of the Trusted Choice . It was part of the Trusted Choice State Reach Program by the national association . Kansas was the third state to adopt the program .
• The Marketing and Management Conference ( notice the name change ) was on October 8-10 , 2008 , in Overland Park at the Doubletree Hotel . The theme was “ Carnivale of Success .” Speakers included : Tracy Young , C . E . Solutions ; Cyd Alloway , Haake Companies ; Chris Burand , Burand & Associates , LLC ; and Scott Primiano , Polestar Performance Programs . The Eggs and Issues panel was led by Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger and IIABA President-Elect David Daniel . The discussion was “ NARAB vs . OII vs . OFC , The Good , The Bad and The Ugly .” There was a crucial debate in Congress at the time . The outcome would determine the regulatory structure of the insurance business of the next century .
• In 2009 , Immediate Past-President Bob Fee was chosen by the National Executive Committee to serve as National Chairman of the Trusted Choice . Bob was recognized as a leader that would shape and direct the necessary changes to push Trusted Choice ’ s success .
