1960s
• An F5 tornado hit Topeka in June 1966 . It left 17 dead and caused over $ 104 million in damages . The tornado was on the ground for 34 minutes and covered 21 miles before lifting . It was a half-mile wide . There was no damage done to the IIAK office building . After its destruction , a meeting Topeka member agents ended with the development of education material for agency disaster situations .
• James D . Wallace was hired as assistant executive director in August 1966 . After Frank Dunkley retired in 1968 , James was promoted to executive director .
• A Chevrolet Belair station wagon was purchased in late 1966 as the first company car . The purchase price was $ 2926.55 plus a 3 % sales tax .
• A committee was formed in 1967 to see if group health insurance would be of interest to members .
Within a year , group health insurance became available to members through the Dorth Coombs Agency in Wichita . The cost was $ 11.95 for singles and $ 23.95 for family coverage per month ; 179 members signed up .
• The Legislature passed House Bill 1048 . The bill required two boards to be formed : The Workers ’ Compensation Assigned Risk and the Automobile Assigned Risk . There were to be two independent agents on each board . Also , that legislation session introduced the Fair Plan and the Truth in Lending Act .
