Chapter 6 : 1970s
The 1970s are remembered as an era when the women ' s rights and environmental movements competed with the Watergate scandal , the energy crisis and the ongoing Vietnam War for the world ' s attention .
• Effective June 12 , 1970 , flood insurance for private dwellings and small business concerns under the National Flood Insurance Act became available through Royal-Globe Insurance .
• The requirements for the Fire and Casualty licensing was tightened July 1 , 1971 . A high school diploma was required . The exam was offered at the insurance department once a month . The cost was $ 10 for each attempt to pass the exam .
• A new political action program was created to encourage members and agents to make contributions that they deemed to be in their best interest . The contributions would be made to the association which would then present checks to candidates on behalf of KAIIA .
• At a June 1974 Board meeting , it was decided that the president should appoint an ad hoc committee to study forming a political action fund .
KAPAC , Kansas Agents Political Action Committee , was established in 1976 .
• Jay Wanamaker ran for the national association office of president-elect and was awarded the title during the National Convention in September 1973 . By 1974 , Wanamaker announced he was seeking president of the national association . He was elected to be president at the 1974 National Convention in Hawaii .
• On March 19 , 1974 , Governor Robert Docking signed into law HB1715 . It was a major revision of the Kansas Workman ’ s Compensation Act which went into effect on July 1 , 1974 .
• An organizational meeting , chaired by Eric Knorr , was held to establish a Young Agents Committee . The membership was notified by a bulletin describing its purpose and that anyone 35 or younger was encouraged to join . The Young Agents Committee became a standing committee of the association in 1974 .
• National proposed changing its name to Independent Insurance Agents of American in 1975 . The proposal was made to stress the independent agents name in the title . At the June Board meeting , the Kansas association also proposed a name change to Independent Insurance Agents of Kansas ( IIAK ). It became effective in October with the membership approval at our annual convention .
• July 1 , 1977 , the Digest of Workers ’ Compensation in Kansas was revised to be presented in readable language about the benefits , eligibility , and conditions of workmen ’ s compensation in Kansas . IIAK prepared the manual and had it available to agents and customers for $ 2 per copy .
• IIAK Presidents Charles Hostettler and Daniel Messelt of the Charlson-Wilson Agency in Manhattan , co-authored a book called “ Profit Sharing Agreements .”
• Steve Lobell was added to the IIAK staff as the liaison of the Government Affairs Committee . The 1978 legislative issue under controversy was the Kansas Torts Claim Act . It was a comprehensive new state law proposed to deal with the tort liability of state and local units of government . It would have a significant impact on local government , affecting public policy actions and local finances .
• The first Day at the Capital was February 28 , 1979 .
