When I first heard the otherworldly
crescendo of strings, stylophone and
the ethereal guitar of David Bowie's
Space Oddity, I knew, somewhere
deep in my lizard brain, that here
was someone that was going to take
us to the very edge of creativity.
We were ripe disciples, of course. I
was of the generation that camped
out in the lounge in sleeping bags in
order to watch Neil Armstrong
unfathomably, incredibly, set foot on
another world. The fact that we still
haven't bested that achievement
speaks volumes for the enormity of
what it was, so never was there a
