Q&A with Mike Dennis

K-1 - Hi Mike, thanks for taking the time out of your day to chat with us! how’s things?

Mike - Things are great. I definitely can't complain and I'm looking forward to getting out

for my next session. I'm actually preparing as we speak.

K-1- On behalf of my self the rest of K-1 Baits staff and followers, I’m sure we all agree, your having a serious year!!! what exactly are you doing out on the bank?

Mike - Thanks. This has been by far my best year of fishing ever and looking back from late winter on, I couldn't have asked for it all to come together any better than it did.

This year I decided early on to do a few things different. First I made it a priority to try and strictly target big fish instead of numbers with some big fish mixed in. In order to accomplish this I fished strictly boilies as my hook baits. Many times always running a 16mm snowman ( or bigger) on one rod and a pop up or big bottom bait on the other rod. In the hopes of deterring some of the smaller fish. I drastically changed my baiting approach as well.

K-1 - What are you doing different this year than you would have done in past seasons?

Mike - Unlike last year I moved around a lot more keeping on top of the shoals of larger fish. Baiting areas generously after scouting and putting in longer sessions at key times. Baiting little during my sessions just enough to hold fish in my swim once they began feeding. By choosing to not fish some of my favorite swims that have produced great numbers for me in the past, I discovered some great new swims and stretches that held much larger fish. Many were difficult to fish due to snags and access issues, but in the end the harder road paid off. Also I paid greater attention to structure, depth, weather and water fluctuation than ever before as well.

K-1 - Why have you decided to go with a bigger baiting campaign rather than just putting bait in when you arrive to the swim?

Mike - I favored the baiting campaign approach so much this year because once I found the bigger fish in a few areas, instead of just picking an area and focusing on it, I was able to keep fish cruising through a number of swims and feeding confidently. I would fish a swim once or twice and although difficult especially after catching bigger fish, I would then let it cool off, keep it baited without fishing it and then fish another swim I had kept baited. Many times with similar success of landing bigger fish. I repeated this process with many swims over the course of the year all with positive results. I introduced boilies into my pre baiting and session feeding as well, which I think had a lot to do with my success this year keeping big fish feeding well on the great bait I have so much confidence in using.

K-1 - K-1 Baits are clearly doing the job for you. what have been your go to baits this year and do you personally find any of them better over others?
