JT: What led you to Peru and this country’s prisons, in the
first place?
JT: ¿Qué os llevó a Perú y a sus prisiones en primer lugar?
VS: The number of women in prison in Peru has practically
doubled in the last 15 years, with many behind bars for committing
poverty–related crimes, particularly drug trafficking. Furthermore,
Peru has a long tradition for alpaca and knitwear, so we use the
fantastic expertise of these women and turn otherwise wasted time
into skills and paid jobs, so that incarcerated women can support
themselves and their children. Alpaca wool is an exclusive and
sustainable materials that make beautiful garments that will last
a long time. VS: El número de mujeres encarceladas en Perú prácticamente
se ha duplicado en los últimos 15 años, con muchas de ellas por
cometer crímenes relacionados con la pobreza, en particular el
narcotráfico. Además, Perú tiene una larga tradición de alpaca y
géneros de punto, por lo que utilizamos la experiencia fantástica
de estas mujeres y transformamos el tiempo perdido en habilidades
y trabajos remunerados, para que las mujeres encarceladas puedan
mantenerse a sí mismas y a sus hijos. La lana de Alpaca es un
material exclusivo y sostenible que consigue hermosas prendas
que durarán mucho tiempo.
JT: How do you envision the imprisoned women that work
with CARCEL? JT: ¿Cómo ven a las mujeres encarceladas que trabajan con
CARCEL?
VS: We see CARCEL’s employees with the utmost respect, we
trust them and we rely on their professional skills. The basis for
CARCEL is to empower the women to engage in the production of
high–quality fashion items for an international market, and make
the best for all the stakeholders involved in the project, hence
us, women, partners and customers. Many of those deprived of
freedom women have children to support and are in prison in the
first place because of poverty, with low educational levels. They
are extremely dedicated to learn and motivated to do their best and
gain dignity and pride by having something to send home to their
families. We see an incredible potential in the women that work
with us and we are sure that they are and will be better off, because
they’re not only making a living but they’re also acquiring skills
and work habits that will both foster their financial independence
and contribute to a law–abiding new life as soon as each one of
them is freed. VS: Vemos a los empleados de CARCEL con el máximo respeto,
confiamos en ellos y confiamos en sus habilidades profesionales.
La base de CARCEL es empoderar a las mujeres a participar en la
producción de artículos de moda de alta calidad para un mercado
internacional, y hacer lo mejor para todos los actores involucrados en
el proyecto, es decir, nosotros, las mujeres, los socios y los clientes.
Muchas de las mujeres privadas de libertad tienen hijos para sostener
y están en prisión en primer lugar debido a la pobreza, con bajos
niveles educativos. Están extremadamente dedicadas a aprender
y motivadas a hacer todo lo posible y ganar dignidad y orgullo al
tener algo que enviar a casa y a sus familias. Vemos un potencial
increíble en las mujeres que trabajan con nosotros y estamos seguros
de que están y estarán mejor, porque no sólo se ganan la vida, sino
que también están adquiriendo habilidades y hábitos de trabajo que
fomentarán una gran mejora en sus finanzas, lo que contribuirá a
una vida de respeto a la ley en el momento en que abandonen ya
libres la prisión.
