Howdy, WSCA Friends!
As the frost finally clears and spring makes its long-awaited debut, it is officially time to shake off the winter dust and get back in the saddle. For me, there is simply no better feeling than the arrival of horse show season— it is, without a doubt, my favorite time of the year. My horse, Channing, is definitely sharing that sentiment; after a long winter inside the barn, he is more than ready to spend his days out in the pasture, soaking up the sun and grazing on that luscious green grass.
Since we compete in both Western and English Pleasure events, the arrival of spring means it’ s time for both of us to get back into a serious exercise routine. Channing— whose registered name is Extreme Quarantine— is a seven-year-old bay Quarter Horse standing at 16.1 hands. I often get asked about his name, and yes, there’ s a bit of history there! He was at barn getting some training during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent shutdowns in California he was there for 12 months, thus the name Extreme Quarantine. I took a bit of a leap of faith when I purchased him as a three-yearold through an online auction, but it turned out to be the best decision I’ ve ever made. He is truly the horse of a lifetime; not only is he a talented athlete, but he has a heart of gold. He’ s so gentle and dependable that I can put young children on his back without a single worry that he’ ll misbehave.
