ON THE RANGE / ON THE COURSE

Thoughts & Tips on Practicing & Playing

ON THE RANGE : THE MOST UNDER-UTILIZED PRACTICE AREA AT THE COURSE : THE PUTTING GREEN
There is an old saying in golf , “ drive for show , putt for dough ”! This saying of course tries to highlight the importance of putting in terms of lowering your score . Putting is 40 % of your total score . As I tell students all the time , this is a relatively non-negotiable number ; meaning regardless of how well you hit shots or how good your shot game is , putting is a very important part of your game . Every day I see many players willing to go to the driving range and work on their full swing for countless hours and multiple days a week . Of course , I think working on your swing is important , but what I find interesting , is many of these same golfers are never on the practice putting green . If you ’ re going to put an hour of practice on the range to work on your full swing , be willing to put in 45 minutes to an hour on the practice green . Here are three easy things a recreational player can do on the practice putting green to improve their putting skills and help lower their scores .
PRACTICE GREEN READING :
There are four skills in putting : Read , Speed Start , Line , Aim ! Reading greens is the most important skill because if the read is wrong , no matter how good the other three skills are , the putt will not go in . There are a lot of ways to discuss reading greens but let me give you an easy way to start to learn how to read greens . Go to your local Home Improvement store and pick up a $ 7.00 plastic level . Place your golf ball on different parts of the practice green 15 to 30 feet from the hole . Walk halfway between your ball and the hole and place the level across the line
