On the 19th of August, two Marr College pupils took part in the Ayrshire Cup debating competition at Wellington School. Johan, S6 and Nuala, S4 were a force to be reckoned with and represented the school brilliantly. Having spent weeks practicing together at lunchtimes, their efforts were handsomely rewarded during the competition itself.
In the first round, on the topic of space exploration, Johan and Nuala placed 2nd of the 4 competing teams. In round two, debating the idea of introducing a fixed fee for teachers based on pupil progress, the team went one better and placed 1st. In their final preliminary round, focused on the concept of a strict work-life balance, they
placed 4th – by this point debating against the other best teams of the competition due to their impressive results in rounds one and two.
Johan and Nuala placed 6th overall from the 32 teams competing – narrowly missing out on a placed in the Grand Final which consisted of the top four teams. With Nuala competing in her first debating event, and Johan being responsible for her coaching they should be filled with nothing but pride at their achievements.
Marr College has now set up a Debating Club that we aim to start running formally after the summer. If any pupils wish to be involved, please speak to Miss McClymont for more details.
