Gear Pump and Motor
in Fluid Power Applications

ear Pump and Motor in fluid power applications have
come a long way. As late as in the Seventies, the gear
Pump and Motor was simply yet anther hydraulic
product line, in the fluid power industry.
The gear products lacked the same versatility as of Vane and
Piston Pumps and Motors. Way back
in Sixties and Seventies most Gear
pumps were typically unbalanced
with limited pressure and volume
range. Early on many gear pumps
were of non - positive displacement
category and used for very low-
pressure applications, such as, crude
fluid transfer and lubrication applications. Later, many mobile
applications like agricultural tractors, profusely used gear
pumps for Implement lifting and lowering jobs. Gear Pumps
in that era mostly would have one inlet and one outlet,
making it hydraulically unbalanced.
In the late seventies and early eighties Gear Pumps and
Motors run through revolutionary
changes in design. This was possible
due to the proficient technology
advancement in gear Hobbing and
shaving. Parker Hannifin being the
pioneer in introducing a wide range of
balance Gear pumps and Motors for
high- pressure application between
2000-3000 psi. Parker Hannifin continue to be the industry
leader in gear product manufacturing, in the decades to
come.

Later, Permco Hydraulic had become a force to recon with, in
the Gear product portfolio. Seeing market opportunities and
protected Parker delivery lead-time, Permco started serving
the market with similar product line and beyond with quickest
delivery and super quality products. Subsequently, Permco
designed their own line and started supporting a wide range
of mobile OEM and Waste management applications.
Today, Permco is a top notch Gear Pump and Motor
manufacturer in the world, with manufacturing facilities in
USA and China and distribution center all across the globe.
UK based Dowty Pump manufacturing company developed
their Aluminum body lightweight Gear pumps for the Aviation
industry applications.
Early gear pumps had Cast Steel body and cover. Later
Aluminum casing was introduced for load sensitive
applications.
During the WWII Gear Hydraulic Pumps started to take its
roots in Europe, Particularly in Italy, Germany and UK.
After the war, Gear Hydraulic Product design in North America
erupted, with Parker Hannifin and commercial hydraulic
taking the leading role. Sperry Vickers thru acquisition also
started manufacturing High pressure (3000 PSI) Gear Pumps
and Motors. There were varieties of single double pumps

Since Mid eighties there are various Chinese Gear pump and
Motor manufacturers emerged, basically to support the user
base replacement market across the globe. Nonetheless,
Parker Hannifin and Permco continue to be the industry
leader in Gear Product line.
Currently, Global gear pump and motor market is way over
Multi Billon dollar and continues to grow.
