A Note From The Editor :
Cats definitely get a bum rap by people who just don ' t understand them . They complain that they ' re aloof , ornery , stubborn , and unaffectionate . People who appreciate cats , of course , disagree . It ' s not fair to compare them with dogs , which you can usually count on to be a little more enthusiastic about your very existence . Cats are just different . More independent , they tend not to be as demonstrative and exuberant as their canine counterparts . Admittedly I ' m more of a dog person , but I love cats , too . And thankfully , so do millions of people in this country . According to recent statistics , nearly 40 % of American households have one . And here ' s an interesting comparison - 53 % of our country ' s households have dogs , but most only have one , while most cat owning families have an average of two . Another curious fact - there are actual scientific studies that show owning any pet is good for your heart and overall health . But cats , in particular , lower your stress level , likely because they don ' t require as much effort as dogs . Cat owners are said to be nearly 30 percent less likely to die of a heart attack or stroke than non-cat owners . Even more interesting are reports of a cat ' s purring having the ability to heal . The frequency of a purr is between 25 and 140 Hz . That same frequency has been shown to aid in the healing of wounds , broken bones , and joint and tendon repair . It can also lower anxiety , stress , and blood pressure , and help alleviate migraines . Now here ' s a sad reality - the ASPCA reports that approximately 3.4 million cats are in shelters in this country ; 1.4 million of them are euthanized every year . June is Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month . If you don ' t already share your home with a wonderful cat ( or two or three ), please consider giving one of these amazing animals a home , and let them return the favor - on their own unique but awesome terms - with years of comfort , healing , and companionship !
